Ignacia Apartments fuse contemporary design with sustainability. Modern architecture has taken on new dimensions with the designers and engineers seeking to build structures that are self-sustaining. Although not everyone can be able to integrate everything needed for a real building self-sustaining, even small changes can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of a structure. Ignacia apartments, designed by Gonzalo Mardones Viviani, is a set of four buildings, including two in each sector. The apartments are designed to facilitate the entry of natural light and air, thus reducing the need for heating units and chillers power hungry, and cleverly making use of space.
Each apartment has three floors and a new fourth set to accommodate a terrace and pool. Live underground space provides a facade of extra life and allows occupants a completely different view of the outside world. The walls make it an interesting design element to create more rooms and panoramic views.

None of the four apartments are identically designed in order to specifically address the needs of the occupants. This means that the apartments do not use space unnecessarily. Straight lines, vertical and horizontal, allow for the entry of air and natural light, while also providing the occupants with privacy. Solar panels on the roof supplement the energy needs of the buildings and their occupants. Plus, by implementing what the experts at Meredith roofing call “cool roofs”, or roofs that easily reflect heat, the energy produced by the solar panels is used more efficiently than ever.
What is immediately noticeable is that the walls are deliberately painted white to reflect light, thus reducing the need for artificial light sources too. The apartments are intelligently designed, so the interior measures only 400-500 square meters. The total land area used is only 2,670 square meters, which is an admirable achievement on the part of the architects.
Some of the other innovative projects credited to Gonzalo Mardones Viviani Architects include Fire Station 18 in Vitacura in Santiago, the Chile Police Museum, and 34 homes as part of a housing development project in Santiago.
